HC Deb 13 July 1981 vol 8 c282W
Sir Frederic Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will list the areas and districts in which it has been agreed that damages under the Riot Damages Act should be paid during the last two years; and what is the estimated proportion of the New Commonwealth immigrants and their families living in such areas.

Mr. Whitelaw

The Avon and Somerset police authority agreed to pay compensation for claims, satisfying the conditions of the Riot Damages Act 1886, arising from the disorder in the St. Pauls district of Bristol in April 1980; the Receiver for the Metropolitan Police has agreed to pay compensation in claims which satisfy the statutory conditions arising from the disorder in Brixton in April this year. The 1977–78 national dwelling and housing survey estimated that about 29 per cent. of the population of St. Pauls Ward, Bristol, and about 29 per cent. of the population of Brixton were of West Indian, African or Indian Subcontinent ethnic origin.
