asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cyclists were convicted for cycling on footpaths during the last two years for which this information is available.

In 1978 and 1979, the latest years for which information is available, about 1,300 and about 1,700 respectively were found guilty in England and Wales of the offence of riding a cycle on a footpath.
