Mr. Hardy

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what action he intends to take to assist energy-intensive industries to meet the high prices they are currently paying for energy in the United Kingdom.

The Department of Industry is responsible for the £50 million coal-fired boiler scheme under which grants are available to industry to convert oil-fired boilers to coal firing. My right hon. and learned Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer also announced measures on gas and electricity prices in the Budget aimed particularly at helping large energy users. A reduction of £10 per tonne in the price of foundry coke was announced at the end of last month.
