HC Deb 13 July 1981 vol 8 cc291-2W
Mr. Stallard

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many trained chiropodists were employed by each of the area health authorities in the London region in the years 1977, 1978 and 1979;

(2) how many trained chiropodists are employed by each local authority; how many trained and untrained chiropodists, respectively, are employed on an agency basis within the areas of each authority; and what number of full-time chiropodists each of these figures represent per 1,000 population over 65 years of age.

Sir George Young

I shall let the hon. Member have a reply as soon as possible.

Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when he expects the consultative document on possible amendment to the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act 1960 in relation to chiropodists to be published.

Sir George Young

Health Ministers are considering the possible amendment of the Professions Supplementary to Medicine Act 1960 so as to restrict the use of professional titles under the Act in spheres such as chiropody to State-registered practitioners. Any proposals must be generally acceptable to the professions concerned, health authorities and Parliament. We are, therefore, considering the issue of a consultative document in the near future.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidance his Department issues on the recommended number of trained chiropodists per 1,000 population.

Sir George Young

No such guidance has been issued.

Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many students graduated from chiropody schools in the years 1979 and 1980; and how many are expected to graduate in the current year.

Sir George Young

The information is as follows:

Students
1979 230
1980 232
1981 between 220 and 230

Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many schools of chiropody are currently in operation in Great Britain.

Sir George Young

Ten are recognised by the chiropodists' board of the Council for the Professions Supplementary to Medicine.
