§ Mr. David Youngasked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many serious injuries and fatal accidents have occurred on each motorway in each of the last five years; and if he will indicate the cases where articulated lorries have been involved;
(2) if he will estimate the loss of life or serious injury per passenger mile on motorways, on rail and on internal air services for each of the last 10 years.

- (i) Accidents and casualties on each motorway: "Road Accidents Great Britain". The relevant tables in the 1979 edition are 21 and 39. The numbers of accidents on each motorway involving articulated lorries could be obtained only at disproportionate computing cost.
- (ii) Casualty-rates per passenger mile on motorways: not available. However, accidents per 100 million vehicle kilometres are given in table 3 of "Road Accidents Great Britain 1979".
- (iii) Railway passenger casualty-rates: table 3.40 of "Transport Statistics Great Britain 1979".
- (iv) Air passenger casualty-rates: some relevant data can be found in table 5.1.1 of "CAA annual Statistics 1979", although separate figures for domestic and international flights are not available.
