Mr. Milianasked the Secretary of State for Defence when he expects the first order for the new class of diesel-powered submarines, SSKs, mentioned in paragraph 26 of Cmnd. 8288 to be placed; and which naval shipyards are to be considered for that and subsequent orders.
§ Mr. PattieIt is not the practice to publish planned order dates. As I explained to the hon. Member for Tynemouth (Mr. Trotter) on 1 July—[Vol. 7 c.428]—under present plans the first of the new class of 124W diesel-powered submarines will be built at the Vickers shipyard in Barrow. It is too early to say where further orders might be placed.
