§ Mr. Lathamasked the Minister for the Civil Service whether she will make a statement on the results of his Department in achieving the Government's policy programme since his predecessor's reply to a similar question by the hon. Member for Melton on 19 June 1980.
§ Mr. HayhoeThe principal objective has not changed since my predecessor replied to a similar question on 19 June last year.—[Vol. 986, c. 590–91.] It remains the achievement of a smaller and more efficient Civil Service, commanding the respect of the public and the pride of those who work in it. The Government's view of the specific priorities of the Civil Service Department are described in the White Paper on the future of the Civil Service Department—Cmnd. 8170. The White Paper on efficiency in the Civil Service—Cmnd. 8293—which was published on 1 July 1981, describes the progress we have made.
