HC Deb 01 July 1981 vol 7 cc383-4W
Mr. Colvin

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will publish a table in the Official Report showing total public expenditure, including capital formation, as a percentage of gross domestic product for the years 1960–61 to date;

(2) If he will publish a table in the Official Report showing public expenditure broken down by capital account and revenue account for the years 1960–61 to date;

(3) if he will publish a table in the Official Report showing general Government final consumption as a percentage of total public expenditure for the years 1960–61 to date.

Mr. Brittan

Figures for the public expenditure "planning total" are not readily available for the years before 1974–75 and a breakdown between expenditure on capital account and current account is not available for any year. Figures for general Government expenditure, from which the planning total is derived, are available for 1961–62 onwards. The relationship between general Government expenditure and the public expenditure planning total is shown in Table 2.4 of "Financial Statistics".

The following table shows the public expenditure planning total, in the years for which this information is available, and general Government expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product at market prices; and the percentage of general Government expenditure accounted for by current expenditure, within which final consumption is shown separately, and expenditure on capital account. Table 2.4 of "Financial Statistics" will include figures for 1980–81 in the July issue.
