Mr. John H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Industry (1) if he will list, by country of origin, the main sources of direct foreign industrial investment in Northern England since 1973; and if he will estimate how many jobs have been created by direct foreign industrial investment in Northern England since 1973;

(2) if he will list, by country of origin, the main sources of direct foreign industrial investment in East Anglis since 1973; and if he will estimate how many jobs have been created by direct foreign industrial investment in East Anglia since 1973;

(3) if he will list, by country of origin, the main sources of direct foreign industrial investment in South-Eastern England since 1973; and if he will estimate how many jobs have been created by direct foreign industrial investment in South-Eastern England since 1973.

Information is not available on inward direct investment in standard region by country of origin. The census of production for 1973 and 1977, the latest year available, provides employment in all overseas controlled United Kingdom manufacturing establishments by region. The increase in employment between those years was 23,000 in the Northern region, 8,000 in East Anglia and 44,000 in the South-East region. Estimates by overseas controlled companies known to Invest in Britain Bureau of the number of jobs expected to be created by projects including expansions started or firmly decided upon in 1979 and 1980 are as follows:
