asked the Secretary of State for Transport if, to increase road safety, he will take steps to make more extensive use of continuous edge of carriageway road markings in non-built up areas.

We already do recommend the use of continuous edge markings on roads which are unlit and where certain other hazardous conditions, as defined in chapter 5 of the traffic signs manual, exist. We are carrying out a study before deciding whether wider use of continuous marking would be justified.
