HC Deb 01 July 1981 vol 7 c390W
Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the recent attempted escape from Albany prison, Isle of Wight.

Mr. Mayhew

On 8 June three prisoners attempted to escape from Albany prison. They gained unauthorised access to the grounds where staff apprehended them as they were attempting to scale the inner fence. The governor has inquired into the circumstances of the incident and my right hon. Friend is satisfied that the arrangements for ensuring the security of the perimeter of the prison worked effectively and that they were fully adequate to frustrate the attempted escape.
