HC Deb 27 January 1981 vol 997 c388W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he is satisfied with the level of financial assistance available to families following the deaths of dependants through violent means.

Mr. Mayhew

I have been asked to reply.

I understand that the hon. Member has in mind payments to the families of victims of crimes of violence. Where a person has died as a result of such a crime, the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board follows the general practice of the civil courts by basing compensation for his family on the extent of its financial dependency upon the deceased, except that funeral expenses may be paid regardless of dependency. My right hon. Friend has no plans to change these arrangements.
