HC Deb 26 January 1981 vol 997 c333W
Mr. Booth

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what percentage of vehicles coming within the scope of the tachograph legislation to date have not yet had instruments installed and calibrated; and what steps he intends to take to ensure compliance with the law.

Mr. Fowler

This information is not available. But of some 1,200 vehicles which were examined during a recent special roadside check for compliance with statutory timetable for fitting and calibrating tachographs 84 per cent. were properly fitted with calibrated instruments. Of the remainder, 11.5 per cent. had tachographs though not calibrated, and 5 per cent. had no tachograph at all. Compliance with the law on this is a matter for the owners and drivers of the vehicles. Enforcement is the responsibility of my Department's traffic enforcement officers and of the police.
