asked the Lord Privy Seal what was the total cost of allowances paid in the latest available year for the children of overseas service and diplomatic staff who attended independent or grant-aided schools in Scotland.

The allowances paid in the financial year 1979–80 for children of diplomatic service officers and other eligible staff in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office—including the Overseas Development Administration—attending independent or grant-aided schools in Scotland was £143,815.
