The figures are the sums actually paid in the financial year concerned and in each case cover payments related to 2 academic years.
Note 2: In 1977–78 the Department revised the timing of its issue of tuition fees and this causes some distortion in the pattern of expenditure.
Note 3: The figures given exclude payments made in respect of student union fees.
