§ Mr. Richard Shepherdasked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will make a statement on the future of the Waste Management Advisory Council.
§ Mr. MacGregorThe Waste Management Advisory Council was set up six years ago to advise the then Government on all aspects of waste management. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment and I have now reviewed the activities and achievements of the council and the work which remains to be done. The council has made a valuable contribution in identifying the main problems and priorities, but we believe that further progress can best be achieved in this important area by more direct and informal co-operation between central and local Government and the other interests concerned. My right hon. Friend and I have therefore decided that the council should be abolished.
