asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the percentage of National Health Service expenditure in the United Kingdom on (a) mental illness and (b) mental handicap patients in the last five years.

The following table shows estimated revenue expenditure on hospital services specifically for the mentally ill and mentally handicapped in England over the last four years, and what this represents as a percentage of total NHS revenue spending:
