HC Deb 19 January 1981 vol 997 c19W
Mr. J. Enoch Powell

asked the Lord Privy Seal how the sovereign equality of States in international law, which is a basic principle of the United Nations Charter, is reconciled with the inequality in this respect between States which are, and States which are not, parties to the Treaty of Rome.

Sir Ian Gilmour

Neither the principle of the sovereign equality of States nor the United Nations Charter is affected by the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community. The preamble to that Treaty includes the followingIntending to confirm the solidarity which binds Europe and the overseas countries and desiring to ensure the development of their prosperity, in accordance with the principles of the Charter of the United Nations".
