HC Deb 19 January 1981 vol 997 cc72-3W
Mr. Haynes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish in the Official Report for each local authority the provision made for meeting the cost of fares paid to schoolchildren for travelling to and from school; and if he will indicate which local authorities provide the full fare to children aged 14 years and above.

Dr. Boyson

This information is not available within the Department. Most of the assistance with home to school travel given by local education authorities is in the form either of a free seat on a school bus or a free pass for travel on public transport. Where an authority reimburses the whole or part of a pupil's reasonable travelling expenses, it does so on the basis of expenses actually incurred.

Details of local education authority expenditure on home to school transport are contained in the education statistics published annually by the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy and copies of its reports are available in the Library.

Mr. Haynes

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he issues any recommendations or advice to local education authorities as to the provision to be made by them for meeting the cost to children of travelling to and from school; and if he will publish any such recommendations or advice in the Official Report.

Dr. Boyson

My right hon. and learned Friend has issued no such guidance.
