HC Deb 16 January 1981 vol 996 c628W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, having regard to the cost up to 30 June last year of about £2 million and the policy of Her Majesty's Government to reduce public expenditure, he will take steps to bring the investigations known as Operation Countryman to a conclusion.

Mr. Whitelaw

It would not be appropriate for me to interfere with these investigations, which are being conducted in accordance with the procedures prescribed by Parliament. As I have previously stated, the Commissioners of Police of the Metropolis and for the City of London, and the officers undertaking the investigations, are fully aware of the need to complete them as quickly as possible.
