§ Mr. Bruce-Gardyneasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will set out in the Official Report the rules governing the issuing of "type approval" certificates to importers of motor cars and the legislation approved by Parliament under which his Department seeks to prosecute importers who do not possess such documents.
§ Mr. Fowler[pursuant to his reply, 12 January 1981]: The issue of certificates in connection with the type approval of cars, both British and imported, is governed by the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Great Britain) Regulations 1979, as amended (S.I. 1979/1092 and 1980/1182).
It is an offence to use or sell a car not duly covered by a certificate, but my Department has not initiated any prosecutions for such offences. We are, however, co-operating with two police forces by providing evidence in relation to other alleged offences in respect of imported cars.
