asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the latest figure for the pupil to teacher ratio in State schools; and what were the comparable figures for the two previous years.

Mr. Mark Carlisle

In January 1980 the pupil/teacher ratio overall in maintained nursery, primary and secondary (excluding special) schools in England was 18.7. The comparable ratio in 1979 was 18.9 and in 1978, 19.4.
