asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement about the work of the new Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons in England and Wales.

Mr. W. H. Pearce CBE took up the new Crown appointment of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons on 1 January 1981. The principles and procedures which he and his team will adopt in inspecting prison department establishments in England and Wales are set out in a document a copy of which has been placed in the Library.
