HC Deb 12 January 1981 vol 996 c448W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make a statement on the availability within each health service region of secure facilities for certain psychiatric patients who need intensive care and surveillance; and if he is satisfied that the recommendations of the Committee on Mental Offenders have been adequately met.

Sir George Young

[pursuant to his reply, 3 December 1980]: Under category (b) the following hospitals should be added: South-East Thames: The Bethlem Royal hospital, Beckenham* (15 places), Can Hill hospital, Coulsdon* (7 places).

The total of places now available is 404.

Also, Aston Hall hospital, which was listed as being in the West Midlands regional health authority area, is in Trent; and there are 56 (not 65) places at Prestwich hospital, Manchester. *The permanent units are planned for the same sites.
