HC Deb 12 January 1981 vol 996 c418W
18. Mr. Leighton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how much has been invested in the British motor industry during the past 10 years; and how this compares with the German, Japanese, Italian and French car industries.

Mr. Michael Marshall

In the years 1970–79 the United Kingdom motor vehicles industry spent £2,740 million at current prices on capital investment. Data on a comparable purchasing power basis for other countries is not available. Figures for the EEC countries in individual national currencies are published in "Annual Investments in Fixed Assets" by the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities.

19. Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he is intending to visit the West Midlands to examine at first hand the industrial situation in that area.

Mr. Tebbit

My right hon. Friend and his colleagues in the Department visited the West Midlands on 15 occasions during the past year. My right hon. Friend already has two further visits planned for this year.
