HC Deb 12 January 1981 vol 996 cc442-3W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many awards of industrial disablement benefit and industrial death benefit have been made for mesothelioma by each of the pneumoconiosis medical panels in each of the years 1967 to 1980, respectively.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Awards of benefit are made by the lay adjudicating authorities appointed under the Social Security Act, not by the pneumoconiosis panels. The table below, however, gives the latest available figures for mesothelioma cases diagnosed by pneumoconiosis medical boards in connection with claims for industrial disablement benefit.

For industrial death benefit awards, the position is still as set out in the reply my right hon. Friend the Member for Daventry (Mr. Prentice), the former Minister for Social Security, gave to the hon. Member on 5 June 1980.—[Vol. 985, c. 829.]
