HC Deb 24 February 1981 vol 999 cc330-1W
70. Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment when he expects that the present unemployed can be offered the chance of suitable employment in all regions of the United Kingdom.

Mr. Peter Morrison

The prospects of the present unemployed being offered employment depends on a number of things such as age, skill, fitness and where they live. We cannot expect a return to full employment until inflation has been reduced, public spending lowered and the competitive position of our industries restored. That will depend among other things on the level of wage and salary settlement.
