HC Deb 24 February 1981 vol 999 c317W
16 Mr. James Lamond

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he is satisfied with the effectiveness of Government measures to reduce unemployment in the North-West region.

Mr. Peter Morrison

I am satisfied that the Government's special measures have made a useful contribution to reducing unemployment in the short term.

The only way, however, to attain a substantial and lasting improvement in employment levels in the North-West and in the country as a whole is to get the economy on to a sound footing. This is what the Government's policies aim to achieve.
