HC Deb 24 February 1981 vol 999 cc349-50W
Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many representations he has received calling for the abolition of tolls on the Tay road bridge; and if he will now consider abolishing the tolls.

Mr. Rifkind

Since the publication by the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board of its proposals for the revision of tolls, my right hon. Friend has received 19 representations in favour of abolishing the tolls.

The Government's policy is that tolls should continue to be charged on those estuarial crossings which provide exceptional benefit to the users. Following a public local inquiry, my right hon. Friend announced on 17 February his approval, with one amendment, of the joint board's proposals.
