HC Deb 23 February 1981 vol 999 c270W
Sir Brandon Rhys Williams

asked the Prime Minister if she is satisfied with the steps taken to co-ordinate the work of the Department of Education and Science and the Department of Employment, concerning the special problems of children who leave school unable to read or write sufficiently well to be able to take up employment; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

The Department of Education and Science is in regular contact with the Department of Employment and also the Department of Industry over the important issue of the education service's contribution to preparing young people for employment.

The education service is concerned to help young people with learning difficulties, and special remedial provision is available not only in schools but in many colleges of further education and adult education institutes. The education service makes a substantial contribution through the MSC's youth opportunities programme for the young unemployed.
