HC Deb 20 February 1981 vol 999 c248W
Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) if he will now make a statement about the proposed new prison at Woolwich Arsenal, indicating (a) the size of the area to be covered, (b) the number and type of prisoners to be accommodated, (c) the estimated total staff and (d) the number of jobs likely to be created for local residents;

(2) when he expects work to start on the building of the planned new prison at Woolwich Arsenal; what is the estimated building time; and how much the project is estimated to cost at 1981 prices.

Mr. Mayhew

Construction probably could not start before the end of 1985 and would take at least four years. All the other matters are still under consideration and may not be decided for another 18 months.
