HC Deb 19 February 1981 vol 999 c191W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on progress in establishing so-called wet shelters.

Mr. Mayhew

Negotiations are virtually complete towards the establishment of an overnight shelter in Birmingham to which the police might take drunkenness offenders as an alternative to arrest and prosecution. This will be in Bordesley, Birmingham B12, and the facility will be managed by the Birmingham Committee for Night Shelter. Necessary adaptations to the building are being made and staff are being recruited; it is hoped to begin operations within the next few weeks.

Consultations on the establishment of a shelter in London are still continuing.
