HL Deb 18 February 1981 vol 417 cc766-7WA
Lord Brockway

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will support the Save the Children Fund and Oxfam in urging the United Nations to increase the volume of relief food transported to Karamoja, Uganda, before distribution is held up by the heavy rains expected in March.

Lord Carrington

Yes. We understand the United Nations is attempting to build up food stocks in the area and at his own request the administrator of the United Nations Development Programme is discussing with us on 18th February the problems of Karamoja including the importance of stock-piling food. The United Nations has also acknowledged the generous help in moving food provided to them by the Save the Children Fund, to whom we have offered up to £160,000 for their transport costs.
