HC Deb 17 February 1981 vol 999 cc92-3W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many redundancies there have been in Scotland, England and Wales, respectively, since May 1979.

Mr. Peter Morrison

[pursuant to his reply, 16 February 1981]: I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that the number of workers involved in redundancies of 10 or more so far confirmed as due to occur in England, Scotland and Wales from May 1979 to January 1981 is as follows:

England 520,692
Scotland 84,169
Wales 55,209

This information is obtained at or before the beginning of a redundancy and the actual numbers made redundant may therefore vary from any initial record as a result of negotiations with trade unions, applications under the short-time working compensation scheme or some other reason.
