asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what were the numbers of Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise staff, respectively, in 1973–74, 1978–79 and at present.

The first two sets of figures quoted are the numbers of staff in post at the beginning of the financial years mentioned in the question; all the figures include staff serving on short-period engagements.
