§ 29. Mr. Michael McNair-Wilsonasked the Secretary f State for the Home Department how many psychologically disturbed prisoners are being held in rison rather than in mental hospitals.
§ Mr. MayhewThe six-monthly census taken on 30 June 1980 identified 457 prisoners whom prison medical officers considered to be suffering from mental disorder of a nature or degree which warranted detention in a psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act 1959. 204 of these prisoners were unsentenced and many of these will have been remanded by the courts for medical reports with a view to making a hospital order. The figures for 31 December are not yet available.
