HC Deb 05 February 1981 vol 998 cc171-2W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for Defence which of the eight new armoured brigades will be in each of the four divisions in Germany; and how the two armoured and three infantry regiments in each division will be divided between the two brigades of that division (a) in peacetime and (b) in wartime.

Mr. Goodhart

The eight armoured brigades formed in BAOR on 1 January 1981 have been placed under command of the following armoured divisions:

  1. 1 Armoured Division—7 and 22 Armoured Brigades
  2. 2 Armoured Division—4 and 12 Armoured Brigades
  3. 3 Armoured Division—6 and 33 Armoured Brigades
  4. 4 Armoured Division—11 and 20 Armoured Brigades

The grouping of armoured regiments and infantry battalions between the two brigades in each division will vary in peacetime and will be based on administrative convenience. The grouping in wartime would depend on the tactical situation.
