HC Deb 23 December 1981 vol 15 c452W
Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what the advantages will he to claimants as a result of the introduction of voluntary registration at jobcentres.

Mr. Alison

Unemployed claimants will in future have the choice as to whether they use jobcentres. Those who register voluntarily with jobcentres will be recognised by employers as keen to find work.

The reduction in work in jobcentres as a result of voluntary registration will make it possible to save over 1,000 staff. The consequent saving of taxpayers' money will aid the economy, to the benefit of unemployed people as well as the rest of the community.
