§ Dr. Roger Thomasasked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will take steps to encourage the use of cyclamates in food in order to reduce the incidence of dental caries in children carried by sugar fermentation from food and confectionery intake.
§ Mr. Geoffrey Finsberg[pursuant to his reply, 14 December 1981, c. 55]: No. The use of cyclamates in food is prohibited because of doubts about safety. The independent committees which advise Ministers on these matters are currently reviewing the use of all sweeteners, other than sugars, in food. A decision on any action which may be needed will await the report of this review, which is expected shortly.
