HC Deb 14 December 1981 vol 15 cc42-3W
Mr. Whitehead

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if, pursuant to his written answers of 12 November, Official Report, column 186, and 30 November, Official Report, columns 39 to 42, he will describe the factors which cause the divergence between the staff-student ratios given in the former answer, and the overall ratio given in the latter answer.

Mr. Waldegrave

The former answer related to the particular faculty groups specified in the question.

Information in the form required had to be sought from a sample survey. This survey does not count the time of academic staff engaged in management or research. It counts students by a measure of load over the whole year.

The latter answer related to all students counted on a single day in the year; and to an estimate of the total number of academic staff engaged in the provision of advanced further education in local authority maintained institutions.
