HC Deb 30 April 1981 vol 3 c436W
Mr. Tilley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many otherwise Stateless people have been registered in each year since 1964 as citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies under the British Nationality (No. 2) Act 1964; in which countries they resided; and how many of them would become British citizens under clause 9 of the British Nationality Bill when passed.

Mr. Raison

The number of persons registered in each year since 1964 as citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies under the British Nationality (No. 2) Act: 1964 is as follows:

1964 5
1965 50
1966 38
1967 67
1968 42
1969 49
1970 68
1971 75
1972 73
1973 60
1974 99
1975 73
1976 48
1977 60
1978 81
1979 112

Final figures for 1980 are not yet available.

Precise information as to the countries in which these people resided at the time of their registration could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. Some indication however is given by the place of registration. Of those registered between 1964 and 1979, 718 were registered in the United Kingdom, which includes applications made from foreign countries, 101 in a dependent territory and 181 in a Commonwealth country by a high commissioner.

It is not possible to say how many of those concerned will become British citizens under clause 9 of the British Nationality Bill, since this depends in most cases on the status of their mothers or the length of their residence, if any, in the United Kingdom when the Bill comes into force and information is not available on these matters.
