§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will alter the nomenclature of boards of visitors, so that they are not confused with "prison visitors".
§ Mr. MayhewA change in the title "board of visitors" would require legislation to amend the Prison Act 1952. In principle, my right hon. Friend would be prepared to support a change which both accurately reflected the duties of boards and was generally acceptable to them. Extensive consultations with boards have, however, not produced a new title which would meet these criteria and in the circumstances my right hon. Friend has decided that it would be better to allow the present title to stand.
§ Mrs. Renée Shortasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he will publish in the Official Report details of all members of prison boards of visitors who do not object to such publication; and whether he will in future inform all persons before they are appointed or re-appointed to prison boards of visitors that their names and addresses will be made available on request.
