HL Deb 09 April 1981 vol 419 c754WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware of the primitive conditions for slaughter of animals in Greece; that only five out of 300 slaughterhouses in Greece are up to EEC standards, and that no humane slaughter methods exist in the majority of Greek abattoirs; and whether they will refuse to grant licences for the export of live food animals to Greece until abattoirs are fully equipped and operators trained to United Kingdom standards.

Earl Ferrers

We are seeking information from the Greek authorities about matters relating to the humane slaughter of animals. No farm animals have been exported to Greece for slaughter or further fattening in recent years.
