Osbornasked the Secretary of State for Industry what representations he has had from industries, particularly in the Sheffield area, whose energy costs are a high percentage of total costs; whether he is now satisfied that they are at a severe disadvantage compared to their overseas competitors; and what steps he is taking to assist these industries.
§ Mr. Michael MarshallWe have received many representations from industry about energy costs, including some from the Sheffield area. The report by the NEDC energy task force on comparative energy prices in the United Kingdom and elsewhere found that whereas the large majority of industrial consumers pay no more than average European prices, large industrial users could be paying significantly higher prices for energy supplies than their Continental competitors. The Government recognise these difficulties, and a £168 million package aimed particularly at helping large industrial users was announced by my right hon. and learned Friend in the Budget.
