§ Mr. Meacherasked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will seek to ban the import of T-shirts bearing Royal photographs or other insignia commemorating the marriage of the Price of Wales, in the light of the circular by the Lord Chamberlain forbidding the domestic manufacture of such items by the United Kingdom textile industry.
§ Mr. Parkinson[pursuant to the reply, 30 March 1981, c. 3]: No. I do not think the use of import controls would be appropriate in the circumstances. The Lord Chamberlain's circular does not forbid the manufacture of such items but lays down guidelines. I understand that the Lord Chamberlain's Office is actively encouraging the United Kingdom textile industry to produce commemorative items of this sort using devices other than those listed in the circular.
