HC Deb 29 October 1980 vol 991 c307W
Mr. McQuarrie

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services in what circumstances persons suffering from chronic disorder of the respiratory organs are unable to obtain relief from prescription charges: and if he will take steps to ensure that all such persons are eligible for relief.

Dr. Vaughan

People suffering from chronic respiratory disorders are not automatically entitled to exemption from prescription charges on medical grounds. Many sufferers will, however, be exempt on age or low income grounds. I receive many requests to extend exemptions to various groups of patients, including those suffering from chronic disorder of the respiratory organs, but I have no plans to make any change.

People requiring frequent prescriptions who are not entitled to exemption can limit the cost of treatment by purchasing a prepayment certificate (season ticket).
