HC Deb 28 October 1980 vol 991 cc223-4W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what estimate he has made of the number of European Economic Community nationals who have registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom at the most recent date for which figures are available or can be estimated; and what estimate he has made of the number of United Kingdom nationals registered as unemployed in other European Economic Community countries.

Mr. Jim Lester

No regular or up-to-date figures are available, but some esti- mates can be made from the biennial labour force surveys carried out by member countries of the European Communities. The survey in the spring of 1979 suggested that, excluding figures relating to the Irish Republic, only small numbers of EC nationals were registered as unemployed in the United Kingdom and only small numbers of our nationals were unemployed in other Community countries. It is estimated however that there were then something over 10,000 Irish nationals registered here as unemployed.
