Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many civil servants are currently employed on each wages council.

Mr. Jim Lester:

No civil servants are employed on wages councils. A secretariat of 16 staff is supplied by my Department to serve all 34 wages councils.

Mr. Brotherton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the cost to public funds of each wages council in the latest 12-month period for which figures are available.

Mr. Jim Lester:

This information is not available in the form requested. The cost to public funds of the total expenses of all wages councils, including their secretariat, is estimated at £280,000 for 1979–80.
