asked the Lord Privy Seal why European Economic Community Ministers decided to deplore the seizure of power by the military authorities in Turkey.

Sir Ian Gilmour:

The statement issued at the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Nine on 15 September was as follows:

  1. 1. The Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Nine discussed the Turkish situation and took note with concern of political developments in Turkey.
  2. 2. They noted the assurances given by the military authorities regarding the speedy reestablishment of democratic institutions, respect for human rights and guarantees concerning the treatment of persons in public life under house arrest.
  3. 3. They entertain the firm hope that these declarations will soon be put into effect in full.
  4. 4. It is in this spirit that the Community will continue its co-operation with Turkey.
