Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average cost of training a teacher for (a) primary and (b) secondary education in Scotland.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher:

The average cost per student of pre-service teacher training in Scottish colleges of education in the 1979–80 financial year was £2,658. The cost of primary and of secondary training cannot be separately identified.

Mr. Ernie Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the total number of teachers employed at independent and grant-aided schools in Scotland; and how many are primary and secondary teachers.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher:

At September 1979, the latest date for which information is available, the total number of teachers in grant-aided schools was 1,118, of whom 292 were employed in primary departments and 826 in secondary departments. 1,396 teachers were employed in independent schools but separate information

Mr. Younger:

After consultation with the commissioner, I see no need to make major changes to the functions and powers of the commissioner, although I intend proposing some minor procedural changes. However, if the right hon. Member has any suggestions I should be glad to hear from him.
